the evangelical outpost: An Open Letter to the Religious Right
"During the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln was purportedly asked if God was on his side.Joe has some insightful and constructively critical remarks to those who consider themselves among the religious right (lower case). Read the rest of Joe's post here.
“Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side,” said the President, “my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.”
Ironically, though Lincoln is often praised for this remark, it contains three of the most controversial ideas in American politics: that God should be invoked in the political sphere; that God’s existence matters, much less that he is always right; and that since He takes sides on certain issues, some people will be divinely justified while others will be in opposition not only to their political opponents but to the very Creator and Sustainer of the Universe.
If you find these ideas absurd and repugnant, you are most likely a secularist. If you find them to be embarrassing truths, then you may be on the religious left. If you find them so obvious that they hardly need stating, then you are probably a member of the so-called “religious right.”"

Question: What happens when a society fully embraces secularism?
A sexually-explicit guide written in a way that condemns traditional North American values and promotes homosexuality and abortion to young girls learning about sex is being considered for use in public schools, and leaders at a family-values think tank are horrified. This is anything but your typical "sex-ed" kind of book. This pushed the envelope at every level and leaves me completely dumbfounded that it could seriously be considered. The project is called, "The Little Black Book – A Book on Healthy Sexuality Written by Grrrls (sic) for Grrrls" and was assembled by a group including the St. Stephen's House community service organization.
The Toronto project, now online after earlier published versions, is, according to Ben-Ami [executive director of the Institute for Canadian Values], "a thinly veiled propaganda piece that undermines healthy parent-child relationships, substitutes voodoo myths for actual science, and provides advice that, if followed, will certainly result in real and serious harm to those who follow it."
For example, the guide states that "only 10% of the population is heterosexual – the rest being 'mixed' or bi-sexual," but mentions no evidence. It also promotes homosexuality and labels parents "homophobes."
"So are children until they get minds of other own," it said.
But wait, there's more...
The article explains that St. Stephens "was started by the Anglican Diocese in 1962, and 'was' a Christian-based settlement house providing community services. It became 'independent' in 1974." Most of the western world is moving to fully embrace secularism. Europe and Canada are currently ahead of the United States, but this is really only a matter of time on our current track. To me, this seems absurd to even consider, but many of those in such decision-making positions, even now would think this worthy of at least considering and find very little offense."One section devoted to lesbian sex is entitled, 'My First Time F***ing a Girl!" This in a book intended for young girls, Ben-Ami noted.
And in a swipe at anyone with a religious background or beliefs, the book includes the comment that, if "you need someone to represent God The Holiness, then for me, it's a fat black dyke."
This is what is coming and it is coming quickly.

Christianity and Islam: Do We Worship the Same God?
I hope that in several occasions during the visit ... my deep respect for great religions, in particular for Muslims - who worship the one God and with whom we are engaged in defending and promoting together social justice, moral values, peace and freedom for all men - has emerged clearly,' Benedict said during his weekly audience at the Vatican.Let me be clear on something: Muslim people are not an enemy. They should not be considered an enemy. They are descendants of Adam and thus sinners and victims of sin just like everybody else in the world. They, like me, need a savior. However, let's also be clear on something else: Christianity and Islam are nothing close to being the same thing and we do not worship the same god (certainly Muslims understand this or they would not consider Christians the infidel: "A person who does not acknowledge your god").
Jesus Christ claimed to be the way, the Truth, and the life and that no one comes to the Father, except through Him (John 14:6). Muslims claim Christ was one of their prophets, though not the greatest and certainly not deity. However, Jesus did not leave them that option. He was either God or nothing. C.S. Lewis said it best: He was either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord.
Though I won't take the opportunity to make Lewis' argument here in it's entirety, it is clear that He was neither a lunatic nor a liar and He clearly left no room to simply be considered a prophet. If Muslims do not believe He is God, then, based on His own claims, Jesus should be considered a liar and not worthy of even being considered a prophet.
For his part, if he is truly a follower of Christ, Pope Benedict has no right to put the redemptive work of Christ on the cross on the same level of Islam simply so no one would be upset with him. Besides, why should the pope fear such a peaceful and loving group? What harm could possibly come to him? The fact is, the pope quoted a historical document and now much of the Muslim world wants him dead.
Though I have absolutely nothing against Muslim people, I don't share in the pope's view of Islam being a "great religion." If Muslims truly want to be known as a peaceful religion, then stop the threats, the protests, and the violence and put away the sword.Benedict cited the words of a Byzantine emperor who characterized some of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad as 'evil and inhuman,' particularly 'his command to spread by the sword the faith.'

Al-Qaida's War Against Christianity
Al-Qaida in Iraq warned Pope Benedict XVI yesterday that its war against Christianity and the West will go on until Islam takes over the world, and Iran's supreme leader called for more protests over the pontiff's remarks on Islam. In case you've doubted the ultimate goal of Islam and the worldwide terrorism that has been going on for many decades before 9/11, including the attacks on the American embassies in the 90s, the first bombing of the WTC towers, and the U.S.S. Cole, perhaps this first statement will make that clear.
Many have warned that the Koran teaches world domination of Islam and death to the Infidel which has become crystal clear after the recent comments by Pope Benedict. While this is not the overt aim of many Muslims, it does not change the fact that the core of this religious system is not peace, it is world dominance at any cost.
Al-Qaida in Iraq and its allies said Muslims would be victorious and addressed the pope as "the worshiper of the cross," saying "you and the West are doomed as you can see from the defeat in Iraq, Afghanistan, Chechnya and elsewhere. ... We will break up the cross, spill the liquor and impose the 'jizya' tax, then the only thing acceptable is a conversion (to Islam) or (being killed by) the sword."Islam forbids drinking alcohol and requires non-Muslims to pay the "jizya" tax, though those who convert are exempt. The tax, sometimes called a head tax, has not been imposed in Muslim nations in about 100 years, though Islamic militant groups have tried to force non-Muslims to pay it on a local level in some countries.
Certainly Christians have gotten it wrong over the centuries, sometimes acting like Muslim extremists by "winning" converts through violence and forcing them to claim Christianity against their wills. The Crusades during the Middle ages is a clear example. The difference is that those actions were clearly contrary to the actual teachings of Christ in Scripture. Those people were not living according to their written doctrines. The heart of Christianity does not seek to win converts this way (regardless of what Rosy O'Donnell might think). It is the exact opposite with Islam. The following quote by some of the Muslim militants sums up my point perfectly:
'You infidels and despots, we will continue our jihad (holy war) and never stop until God avails us to chop your necks and raise the fluttering banner of monotheism, when God's rule is established governing all people and nations,' said the statement by the Mujahedeen Shura Council, an umbrella organization of Sunni Arab extremist groups in Iraq.I desperately wish the political liberals of this country were right and that we could just stop the war on terror, bring all our troops home and simply claim peace. Sadly, they are dead wrong and peace will never come that way and, just as on and before 9/11, we will see that Islam will not leave us alone and "live and let live." They cannot because the "infidel" still lives.
True peace can only come through Jesus Christ. He is, as John Piper said, a universal solution for a universal problem of sin for all people of all backgrounds and all times. Our governments must do their job of defending and protecting their people. They must continue to try and stop the unprovoked acts of violence against people of the world, but Christians worldwide must realize that our hope can never be found in governments or military might, but in the certainty that Christ will bring ultimate peace and victory, that our citizenship is elsewhere, and we must spread that hope with every fiber of our being. That has always been difficult, but with the worldwide goals of Islam, it promises to only get much, much harder in the future.
[Quotes from the Lexington Herald]
NOTE: Comments in this post should not be misunderstood to mean that the U.S. government is equated with Christianity. That is not the case at all. Most of those in the middle east equate everything "Western" as Christian. That is far from the truth and is not, in any way, an implication I have desired to make through this post, so I hope that is clear.

The American Spectator: Islam as Religion of Peace Hard to Swallow
As I travel the globe, I keep looking for evidence that Islam is the religion of peace and Judaism and Christianity are using violence to advance their faiths. Strangely, I have yet to discover Christian converts filling a truck with dynamite and destroying a mosque. Or congregants at a Jewish temple torching a Muslim madrassah. I'm looking for cases of Mormons hijacking a plane to crash into downtown Islamabad, Hare Krishnas kidnapping and beheading Muslim aid workers, and Bahais taking over a cruise ship and tossing overboard a handicapped, elderly Muslim.Read this article in its entirety here.
I'm still waiting.
In fact, the worst religious persecution comes in Islamic nations. In Indonesia I saw churches and a Bible school that had been destroyed by Muslim mobs. In March I met a Christian pastor whose wife lost a leg in a bombing at their church; their home was burned down the following year. A few years ago I walked through Christian neighborhoods in the town of Ambon burned down by Muslim mobs.
Islamic protests against the slightest Western criticism of or doubt about the religion of Mohammed ring hollow. It is sad that many Muslims appear unable to defend their faith through anything but intimidation. Moreover, so long as their religion is noted for its willingness to persecute and employ violence around the globe, they have little credibility to complain of offenses by others.
Does what we say in the West bother Muslims in the Mideast and elsewhere? I have trouble feeling guilty so long as Islamic states fail to recognize that people created by God in his image should be left free to decide whether and how to follow him. A coerced conversion yields no glory to God, even if his name is Allah.

Minnesota lawmaker aims to be 1st Muslim in Congress. First of Many?
"MINNEAPOLIS - State lawmaker Keith Ellison didn't let questions about his past slow down his campaign to become the first Muslim in Congress. This is America where this gentleman has every right as a citizen to run and be elected, but if this starts a trend towards widespread Muslim influence, I've got a very uncomfortable feeling about it.
On Tuesday, voters responded to his liberal message calling for peace, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and universal health care. He beat three contenders in the Democratic primary in a Minneapolis-area district long dominated by his party."
I'll say this about him: he's pushing all of the right liberal buttons. However, these voters who want peace at all costs (which isn't really peace at all) had better be careful when the word "peace" is thrown around in this context...it doesn't always have the same meaning and the price may be too high for even them to be able to pay.

More Tooth Fairy Stuff: Chavez thinks WTC was a Washington conspiracy, too.
Venezuela's president said it's 'not absurd' to think that Washington had a hand in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The South American leader who claims the United States launched wars in Afghanistan and Iraq only to solidify political power now contends a building like one of the World Trade Center towers 'never collapses like that' and 'could have been dynamited.'Dynamite. Sure. I mean, why not? After all, It couldn't have had anything to do with those two AIRPLANES that flew into the top of them.
Give me a break...dynamite. Sheesh.

What Does Osama Bin Laden and the Tooth Fairy Have in Common?
According to a Norwegian Imam in a recent edition of the Norwegian newspaper, Aftenposten, it is doubtful that Bin Laden even exists and more likely that the September 11 attacks were orchestrated by "Bush & Co" than by radically faithful Muslims. Why? Because, according to him, Islam only teaches peace. Actually, he is partly correct: the Koran does teach peace...to all who convert to Islam. For everyone else, all bets are off. The Koran teaches the lawful destruction of the Infidel under the blessing of Allah. Now, who would that Infidel creature be? I believe that would be anyone who is not Muslim. And 2 + 2 still equals 4.
While it is true that most Muslims thankfully don't favor violence, it is only because they are not completely committed to the absolute teaching of their faith. It's like people who say they are Christians even though they don't actually know or apply the teachings of Jesus to their lives. This is nothing new. The difference here is that Christ actually says to love your enemies rather than to annihilate them.
Just so I'm not misquoting, here is what was said in the article:
Asked for his honest opinion on the terrorist organization al-Qaida and Osama bin Laden, the imam said 'I think this is something that’s been made up.' He also questioned whether the September 11 attacks were actually orchestrated by Muslims, and lent credence to so-called 'conspiracy theories' that suggest otherwise. It was the next part that was really hard to swallow:
Imam Zulqarnain Sakandar Madni also stressed repeatedly that all people must show respect for one another. 'If everyone respected one another as people, we wouldn't have any problems. But it seems everyone wants to show what great power they have.'Who is he talking to? Why doesn't he give a call to some of his insurgent brethren who are blowing up all of those people like animals?
'We want peace for everyone. That's what Islam stands for!'
Asked what he does as both a Muslim and an imam to prevent terrorism, he said he tells his followers 'that human respect is an absolute demand in Islam, and a good Muslim must be a good citizien. And that injuring or killing anyone is forbidden.'
I'll take that. I have a hard time believing he means that and I don't believe that, in its essence, this is a religion of peace, according to the Koran, but if he could get those terrorists to stop their mass murdering, I'll take it. I know, I know, they're just figments of our collective imagination and all of these car bombs and suicide murderers are desert mirages and all of these bloody bombing "victims" are just, like, cutting themselves to make other Muslims look bad or something...but just humor us, will you?

On this, the fifth anniversary, I thought it appropriate to repost the image and encourage us to never forget all that was lost on that tragic day and to remind us of the depths of human depravity apart from the forgiveness and renewal of humanity through Jesus Christ and His resurrection.

Born With a Belief in the Supernatural
Religions will continue to thrive despite the rise of science and rationality because we are all born with a tendency to believe in the supernatural, according to research published yesterday. He's right on one point, it does operate at a fundamental level. For a scientist, he made a very rational statement. The foundational question is, why? Why is it a fundamental part of our make up? Some scientists, like Professor Hood, would like to make us believe that it's simply the way we evolved. Though, if it is something that is a part of evolution, and evolution necessarily leads to determinism, how could it be that so many scientists are atheists? How did they overcome this fundamental part of their make-up? Interesting.
"Magical thinking" is hard-wired into our brains, according to Prof Bruce Hood, of the University of Bristol, speaking at the British Association's annual festival in Norwich. Prof Hood challenged the assumption of Prof Richard Dawkins and other "ultra rationalists" that belief in the supernatural was spread by religions in gullible minds.
"Rather, religions may simply capitalise on a natural bias to assume the existence of supernatural forces," he said.
"It is pointless to get people to abandon their belief systems because they operate at such a fundamental level that no amount of rational evidence or counter evidence is going to be taken on board to get people to abandon these ideas." [Full article]
I believe the answer lies in the fact that we are not products of evolution and, thus, not subject to determinism in which the blind series of cause and effect in a closed cosmological system would render us, we actually do have the freedom to choose to supress the truth that there really is a creator (Romans 1). See, I think that if Professor Hood were to let down his hard-fought, scientific predisposition to Naturalism, we would see that he doesn't really believe we're simply products of evolution. Look at some of his word-choices: "'Magical thinking' is hard-wired into our brains...". Later in the article, he says, "The mind is programmed to see coincidences as significant and to think that inanimate objects have minds." (italics added) Words like "hard-wired" and "programmed" imply design. Nothing is hard-wired by accident and nothing is programmed by accident. When was the last time you saw an accidentally "hard-wired" computer that was "programmed" by chance? And those of us who believe in God are irrational?
As I said before, the fact is we are hard-wired and programmed to believe in the supernatural much like, as Alvin Plantinga pointed out, we're hard-wired to believe that all people have brains even though we can't see them...because they are reality; because we see evidence of them (usually), and it is right to make this assumption based on the evidence.
Most of us who have not convinced ourselves otherwise at least believe that there is "something else" beyond life and death on this earth. Most people on earth are convinced of this. The fact is, eternity is built into us. As Professor Hood so eloquently stated, we are programmed with this. God has put eternity into our hearts and too many times, we try and cast it off as superstition, fantasy and myth. However, too many people have experienced supernatural events in the real world that cannot easily be explained away.
The bottom line is this: those who are convinced that the supernatural cannot happen may never change their minds unless God determines to reveal Himself in a very real way (which He has certainly done before). However, listen closely and you will hear even those who say they don't believe in anything beyond evolution describe the cosmos in very design-oriented terms. Why? Because to use terms that imply mindless chance to describe the most complex systems of the universe sounds simply...well, irrational. And the truth is, it is.

'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin Killed By Stingray
This is certainly tragic, though anyone who has ever watched this man at work, taking the risks he did, had to wonder if he would live a very long life. Irwin leaves behind his wife, Terri, and two children, ages 8 and 3.CAIRNS, Australia - Steve Irwin, the hugely popular Australian television personality and environmentalist known as the “Crocodile Hunter,” was killed Monday by a stingray while filming an underwater documentary on the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44. Irwin was killed by a stingray barb to the heart on Batt Reef, off the remote resort town of Port Douglas in northeastern Queensland state, his wildlife park Australia Zoo said in a statement. Crew members aboard Irwin’s boat, Croc One, called emergency services in the nearest city, Cairns, and administered CPR as they rushed the boat to nearby Low Isle to meet a rescue helicopter. Medical staff pronounced Irwin dead a short time later.
