Espresso Roast Turns 2

Today is my second anniversary...I guess most people in the "blogosphere" call that a blogiversary, don't they? Whatever it's called, it's here today.
A lot of stuff has been poured out on this tiny slice of the internet over the past two years. Some of it I look back and feel a sense of satisfaction that I was successful in presenting a perspective consistent with the biblical worldview that I espouse while other times I just say, "What they heck were you thinking?" Most of the posts in the latter group tend to fall within the category of politics (though certainly not all).
Generally speaking, I have always tried to adopt the position of being "apolitical," especially as a pastor. I think it much more important for the Church and those within the Church to address the world from an objective biblical perspective rather than a particular party's platform. I have not always succeeded (especially during the early days of this blog which started during the presidential election season).
The Church is supposed to address all parties and all people with the Truth of Scripture, lest we become just another special interest group within the political sphere. I'm afraid the latter is all we have become and have forfeited our honored position as a voice of conscience and direction to the world at large. Anyway, that's for another day.
What is the future of this blog? I don't know exactly. I think blog years are like dog years: it's only been two, but feels more like fourteen. It is certainly a time-consuming endeavor, though a rewarding one. It makes you think about what you believe, spit it out into words and then attempt to shape your words and communicate the truth you arrive at in a coherent and informative way. At least, that is what it is to me.
This year promises to be very different as I believe my family's future will involve a move soon and a new place in ministry and, Lord willing, a new addition to the family. Time for blogging may be hard to come by, but I believe it needs to be a priority...maybe not for anyone else but me. I certainly hope that my little thoughts have served to challenge at some points, enlighten in some way, and encourage in many, but that may all be fanciful thinking. Nevertheless, it has caused me to grow in ways I probably wouldn't have otherwise.
So, I'm sure there will be more "blogiversaries" for this little blog. God only knows for certain, but I hope there will. At first, I was bummed that this anniversary fell on Saturday, a day that hardly anybody reads blogs (how narcissistic does that sound, huh? "Hey, why didn't anybody come to my birthday party?") Then I was kind of glad because I felt more comfortable writing all of this stuff about me knowing that probably not as many people will read it.
So for those who have been coming around here for at least some part of the last two years, thanks. I'm humbled and blessed. Now, on to number three.

David,
Congratulations on your anniversary. You may be happy to know that someone did read your blog on a Saturday.
I admire your desire to be "apolitical". It speaks well of your ability to see through the manipulation of religion by the Republican party for political gain. However, if you truly do wish to be apolitical, I think you were mistaken to post that picture of soldiers referencing John Kerry's "botched joke". The fact that the picture has been in such circulation is testament to the fact that the Republicans are hard at work milking the comment for all the political ill-will they can get from it. And that you posted it on your site makes you appear to follow lockstep with the Republican propaganda machine. You may say you posted it to "support our troops", but even that is a thinly veiled way for Republicans to demonize anyone who disagrees with them. I don't know any Democrats who don't respect, admire and "support" our troops, they just don't support Bush.
Was Kerry's comment inappropriate? Yes. Did it show poor judgement? Certainly. The soldiers were offended by his remark, and spoke out against it, and John Kerry as a veteran fought for their right to be able to speak freely against any political figure, including himself. But for you to post it on your supposedly "apolitical" site showed either hypocrisy or naivete. I think you can do better than that, David.
Anyway, I don't mean to rain on your anniversary. Have a great day, and I look forward to more interesting discussions.
Janet, thanks for the well-wishes and for the scolding, I suppose. :-)
Just for the record, simply posting a picture I thought was pretty doggone hilarious doesn't necessarily mean I made a political statement. I said nothing against the guy that I'm betting you voted for last election nor did I say anything in support of President Bush.
Being apolitical doesn't mean I have no preferences. I'm still a citizen and have responsibility to get behind a candidate and vote. It simply means I try and be as neutral/fair-minded as my conscience will allow and select a person based on their character, record, and platform, rather than blindly according to a party. Sometimes I select the right guy and sometimes the wrong. Case in point: one time while living in Massachusetts, I actually voted for Kerry in a Senatorial election. Wrong guy. I haven't made that mistake again. ;-) I also do tend to shy away more and more from partisan issues and attempt to speak more to the ethical, moral, or worldview aspect of it.
As for the politics of it, if Dems do something I think is a mistake, I can speak against it. I can do the same with Republicans. The whole Foley scandal is a great example of dumb moves by Repubs.
The thing about this current blunder is that I have yet to see how what Kerry said could even remotely be associated with a joke. If it was a botched joke, then he's a really bad joke-teller.
So, I don't think it's either hypocrisy or naivety. It's just a picture...a really funny picture. One question for you: would you be so upset if it were a picture related to something dumb Bush had said?
Just keeping things in perspective here. Thanks again for writing. :-)
Congrats on the anniversary. Keep up the good work.
Don't let Janet's illogical jab ruin what is otherwise a wonderful milestone. Your site is apolitical.

Thanks, Scott. I appreciate the encouragement and confirmation. I may disagree with Janet's perspective but I'm really glad she feels the freedom to comment...that's what it's there for. Keep up the good work on your blog as well...it's one of my favorites.
Good grief. I just read Janet's comment, and simply have to say to her: Give me a break. It was a funny picture, Janet, period, and posting it makes no kind of political statement at all. If you can't see that, then you're the one who's either hypocritical or naive, not David.
