Minnesota lawmaker aims to be 1st Muslim in Congress. First of Many?
"MINNEAPOLIS - State lawmaker Keith Ellison didn't let questions about his past slow down his campaign to become the first Muslim in Congress. This is America where this gentleman has every right as a citizen to run and be elected, but if this starts a trend towards widespread Muslim influence, I've got a very uncomfortable feeling about it.
On Tuesday, voters responded to his liberal message calling for peace, withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and universal health care. He beat three contenders in the Democratic primary in a Minneapolis-area district long dominated by his party."
I'll say this about him: he's pushing all of the right liberal buttons. However, these voters who want peace at all costs (which isn't really peace at all) had better be careful when the word "peace" is thrown around in this context...it doesn't always have the same meaning and the price may be too high for even them to be able to pay.

Hey David, just checking out what you've got up lately. I realize this one is almost a month old, but it involves my neighborhood, so to speak. I don't live in that district (Keith Ellison is running to represent much of Minneapolis and some western suburbs) but I live and work nearby.
So you are saying that Muslims just can't be trusted? You are hinting that Keith Ellison, who has been serving the area in the MN House of Rep. since 2002, maybe, just maybe, advocates peace only for Muslims?
Good slippery slope argument.
And you title:
Minnesota lawmaker aims to be 1st Muslim in Congress. First of Many?
Is that supposed to sound ominous?
If you don't understand what I'm saying about Islam, perhaps you may want to spend some time finding out what the Koran does and does not allow (and sometimes call for) Muslims to do in order to promote their faith. If you did, you would understand that it is not a slippery slope. As a matter of fact, it's not even an attempt at a slippery slope argument. I'm saying I'm not comfortable if Muslims win a majority because I know that the ultimate command for Islam (regardless of what individual followers may or may not promote or believe like your friend, Keith) is to convert or eliminate. Islamist fundamentalist are actually being quite consistent with the teachings of their faith. Sound ominous? Oh, well. Check it out for yourself.
Let me just go ahead and add a little bit more in response to the following comment you made on another blog, gravitybear:
"Here's someone else worried about a Muslim congressman: http://espressoroastblog.com/200...-to-be- 1st.html
And he doesn't even live in MN."
1. It's Congress...of the United States. You don't have to actually be from a particular state in order to be concerned with who is a part of it. It affects us all.
2. I am not against Muslim people, nor do I think all Muslims are terrorist (which seems to be the implication). I don't think that any more than I think all atheists are amoral...I just say they have no basis for their morality and have yet to have one explain to me otherwise. I have Muslim friends whom I respect. I simply know something about the Koran and that if they decide to take their faith seriously and live out the letter of the Koran, it doesn't lead to what we consider peace. Peace, for Islam, can only happen ultimately within the context of Islam. Fortunately, most don't.
In light of what happens within those countries controlled by Islam, I don't think either of us really want that to happen here. Based on the level of commitment many American Muslims have, it may not, but that is most certainly something we can't know until it happens. The facts about that religion are the facts, like them or not. If you want to find out what it's like, perhaps living (or even visiting) in one of those countries for a while will give you a good taste of it. I don't think you would like it.
3. As I said in my post, the will of the people will and should be done. This person, as an American citizen, has every right to run and to be elected if that's what the good people of MN want.
