My Neighborhood the War Zone

I mentioned earlier today that the 'redneck fireworks' were last night. Boy, was I wrong. The fireworks on my street were last night. The surrounding areas were very much tonight...and continue even now. (note: I'm not implying the people in my community are hicks. We call it that because we usually get chairs and sit out by the street and watch them and that's what it looks like)

I don't know if I can adequately convey the scene around here. It really sounds like what you would expect during urban warfare. It is a phenomenon unlike any I've ever experienced. Massive fireworks are going off all around us (usually into the wee hours of the morning!) in every direction. To try and give you a little taste, I walked outside with my digital recorder and just took a little sampling. Have a listen:

Has anyone else experienced like this or is this just a strange Louisville tradition?

Wow! Are you sure you didn't record that at our house? Cause I was sure one of my neighbor's houses was going to be levelled at the foundation this morning after all the stuff going on out there last night!

Actually, that sounds just like my neighborhood last night as well. There's simply no way on the internet to convey the heavy, foggy smoke that entrenched us, nor the smell that is associated with such smoke. It's really an amazing phenomenon, especially considering that's illegal in our state and city to set off such displays.

You're right. I didn't even mention the smoke. I've laughed saying that it would be the perfect night for kids to play soldiers. The smoke is thick and the noise is loud. The air quality is definitely low...crazy.
