More Abortion Challenges on the Way
Following closely on the hills of last weeks passage of a restrictive abortion law in South Dakota, Mississippi legislators are working on a new law that would restrict abortions even further in a state already known for some of the toughest laws in the Country.
Currently, Mississippi only makes exceptions for abortions when the pregnant mother's life is in danger. Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour (R) would most likely sign the bill, though he would like to see exceptions for incest and rape.
Speaker of the Mississippi House of Representatives, Billy McCoy (D), seems to side with the abortion restrictions: “As I live longer and longer, the harder and harder it has become for me to accept abortion, period.” On a personal level, I must comment on how refreshing it is to hear those words come from a Democrat.
McCoy agrees with Barbour in preferring exceptions be added that would allow for rape and incest, stating that voting for the bill as it stands is “pretty tough.” He went on to say, though, that it's tough “for those of us who don't believe in abortion to think about the taking of a human life, regardless of how it got started to be on this earth.” That is the heart of the issue that must be addressed.
All I will say is may the people of my home state, which usually ends up at the bottom of everyone's list of advancements, continue to demonstrate who they really are as they not only continue to be one of the leading states in charitable giving, but also as they lead the way in promoting a culture of life.

Amen.
Anna Quindlen wrote an article on Mississippi's restrictions. She made a feeble attempt to justify the termination of life based on logical fallacies. My students read the article and saw the absurdity of the issue from Quindlen's perspective. Even in Ohio we are aware of Mississippi's value of life at all stages. Hope your mom is well.
