Only $150 million in cuts? Come on!
Hey, it's a start. That would be $150 mil the taxpayers aren't shelling out for programming the majority in this country doesn't watch, doesn't support and/or couldn't care less about.
I actually think public broadcasting provides a nice service. I'm thinking radio here. It's nice to have an alternative to Clear Channel and other corporate radio outlets. You'll never get classical music, for example, on corporate radio.
Of course, I'm sure XM could help fill in those niches, but not for free.
I happen to like aspects of it, too, but that doesn't lead me to believe it should be government funded using tax dollars. No one should be forced to pay for programs they are not in support of. I'm generally not a boycott kind of guy, but at the public has that option with network stations they disapprove of. You can choose to refrain from listening or watching public tv all you want, but you're still going to pay for it. That just isn't right.
Perhaps a better approach is using the principle of toll roads: let those that use it, pay for it. Let "public" radio and tv stations solely solicit funding through private corporations and individuals that agree with their particular idiologies (or those of a particular program).
In that case, a particular program may gain a great deal of support from one corporation while another that deals with different issues may get it from another. If they don't get the support for a particular type of program, they don't produce it.
Let them use more commercials (it's not like they're not on there now anyway).
Either way, I'm not supportive of this governmental funding mechanism that forces individuals (regardless of politics, religious affiliation, etc.) to help pay for what often amounts to progaganda they would never support otherwise.
