Bangladesh Outlaws Oscene Films
"Dhaka: The Bangladesh parliament has adopted a law to check exhibition of obsecene films, officials said here today.Wow. Can you imagine if that happened here in the States? Hollywood would have to literally shut down. I know there are issues of censorship and freedom of speech and that sort of thing, but frankly, I can't imagine Congress caring that much about the impact on youngsters to consider such a move. Cynical? Maybe. Realistic? I'm afraid so.
The House last night passed the Censorship of Films (Amendment) Bill 2006 by voice vote, they said.
The law provides for a maximum three-year imprisonment or a fine of Tk 10,000 or both for exhibiting obscene film or any film without the approval of the Film Censor Board.
Piloting the bill, Information Minister M. Shamsul Islam said people were all for healthy and decent entertainment through films, but recently obscenity in films has increased alarmingly.
'There are lot of complaints against exhibition of porno, obscene and distasteful scenes and cut-piece films,' he said.
Islam said that in absence of stringent law, a section of dishonest film makers were inserting obscenity in their films for earning excess profit, but which was having an adverse impact on the youngsters."
