Washington Times: Religious conversion redefined nominee's worldview

I wanted to point out this interesting article about Harriet Miers from the Washington Times in case you missed it. Unfortunately, I've had little time, in light of my wife's accident, to spend much time familiarizing myself with Miers beyond what I've heard through the MSM. Despite what I've heard from some conservatives, it seems as though she will be a good candidate. Do you have any thoughts or compelling arguments one way or the other?

By way of a quick medical update, my wife had an appointment with one of the doctors at Kleinert, Kutz & Associates regarding her wrist. I mention that name only because I've been surprised at how many know about these doctors and also to point out how good God has been to us through this. In case those names aren't familiar to you, I found out that the leading hand doctors in the world are right here in Louisville. Kleinert and Kutz are the doctors who pioneered the hand transplant and are considered the doctors for hand injury. We felt very blessed. So, as it turns out, after additional x-rays, one of the bones is not in exact alignment, though the doctor says that if nothing shifts, it may be within an "acceptable" range. In two weeks we go back and if her wrist has shifted further out of position, another surgery will require a metal plate in her wrist. Please pray not only that the bone will not move further out of place, but that it will actually shift into alignment. Thanks.

Oh, and I have been asked what my wife was kicking at. Well, my 5'4" wife was kicking at the face of a 6 foot tall guy (not to actually kick him but to show some of the other girls she could do it). I must say, had she been wearing sneakers she wouldn't have fallen...but regardless, had she been trying to actually kick his face, I would also be blogging about his broken nose. As for me, I'm glad I'm six foot tall...and three inches!

David,
I read your opening paragraphy via my feed reader and I cringed for you. Hopefully your readers will be kind, but if what I've seen in the conservative blogosphere in the last three days happens here, half of the comments will pillory you for being a naive, good natured twit, and the other half will commend your intuition. I can't recall seeing conservatives so divided and snarling at each other, and I've been a "participant-observer" for years.

I hope your query leads to gracious, reasoned discussion in the comment thread. More importantly, may the Lord give grace to your wife, you and all who participate in her treatment.

Wow, at least I'll be a good-natured twit. Like I said, I've not had much opportunity to root out the comments in the blogosphere regarding Meirs so the "naive" comment may be applicable, though "uninformed" may perhaps be more fitting if I am wrong. That's why I'm hoping I can get filled in on the arguments for both sides.

My understanding (at this point) is that Meirs is viewed as unqualified by the Republicans because of her lack of experience as a judge and her pedigree (being from SMU and not a more "prestigious" school). Beyond that, I've heard little more that is of substance. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to catch up on my reading and find out the skinny on the objections. Thanks for your post and your well-wishes.

David:

My take has been that the objections have largely been from the conservative elite that hail from Ivy League schools. I think this is a nomination that evangelical Christians can rally behind.

I have posted two perspectives so far (and will probably write a third tonight): http://martinmusings.blogspot.com/2005/10/harriet-miers-originalist.html; and http://martinmusings.blogspot.com/2005/10/miers-nomination-update.html.

Marvin Olasky at World Magazine may have written the best article yet in support of Miers: http://www.worldmag.com/subscriber/displayarticle.cfm?id=11141.

Meanwhile, Hugh Hewitt has gathered numerous posts that are complimentary to Miers.

I tend to agree with you, John. I have since read a couple of articles about Miers that make me stick with my initial assessment. I don't think any candidate will be perfect, but I do think picking a conservative nominee who has the possibility of actually being confirmed is wise. A couple of articles I've read are:

I also look forward to reading your posts. I still hope to hear from some other bloggers/readers who have other views.

Add to that this post from Marvin Olasky at World Mag:

"One email I received complains that evangelicals positive towards Harriet Miers just want an evangelical on the court; forget all the blather about wanting someone who will take the Constitution as is instead of twisting it. Hmmm -- I can't speak for others, but I really want an originalist. If I could be assured that an atheist would be an originalist, that would be fine with me. If an evangelical nominee wanted to put in the Constitution what's not there, I'd oppose him or her. I'm glad Miers is a conservative evangelical, because if her goal is to please Christ she is far less likely than someone without that compass to have the goal of pleasing academic and media liberals. But once the lifetime appointment is gained, there are no guarantees -- regardless of paper trail, track record, or anything else."

I think that's a fair statement that highlights the important aspects of the issue for me.
