New Hampshire Is Getting In On The P.C. Game

Fellow blogger, Tim Ellsworth, points out yet another instance of political correctness run amuck:

A high school in New Hampshire has eliminated the term “freshman” and will now refer only to “ninth graders” because it’s a gender-neutral term.

While they’re at it, may I suggest they replace the title “administrators” with “raving lunatics” as well.

Just when you thought the level of P.C. in America could become no more ridiculous, somebody demonstrates their creativity. Is it just me or should administrators not be spending their time on more important issues? Hey, I've got one: why don't they try actually teaching our children?

I agree that the obsession with gender-neutralizing everything is a bit much, and don't feel that we need to change well-known words and titles to fit both sexes. HOWEVER...just a question: what would you have felt about being called a "freshwoman" your first years of highschool or college? Maybe that's a new perspective to think abou it from.

Well, I went to school with some people who would have been considered "freshwomen". Does that count?

Like you stated, I don't think it is necessary to make these kinds of changes in order to prevent offending 9th grade students.

I'm afraid next we'll all become members of the "hu-person race." Not long ago, I would have considered that a dumb joke too far from the realm of possibility. Now? Not so much.

Thanks for your perspective.
