Trapped Russian Sailors Rescued

News of the rescue of the Russian Navy personnel trapped for nearly three days in a tiny submarine is great news. Since the Kursk submarine was lost by the Russians nearly five years ago to the day, killing all 118 aboard due (at least in part) to Russian President Vladimir Putin's stubbornness and pride, refusing the help offered by the international community, news of this rescue was quite a relief.

Following this incident, President Putin should take a few extra minutes to think through the events surrounding this rescue as he considers his future alliances:
The new crisis has been highly embarrassing for Russia, which will hold an unprecedented joint military exercise with China later this month, including the use of submarines to settle an imaginary conflict in a foreign land. In the exercise, Russia is to field a naval squadron and 17 long-haul aircraft.
Perhaps I'm wrong here, but I have a sneaking suspicion I know who the "imaginary conflict in a foreign land" is with. Ironic, is it not, that the ones for whom the exercises are intended to either attack or defend against (given the loose alliance with China) are the very ones (OK, I'll spell it out...Britain and the United States), who responded to the cry for help and saved the sailors?

I think Vladimir better do a whole lot of soul-searching before he makes his next move...which could prove to be a grave mistake for everyone involved.

By the way, how many rescuers did China send?
