Ridiculous Item of the Day: NCAA Goes On The War Path
The NCAA says it is will no longer put up with "hostile" and "abusive" American Indian nicknames. That according to a New York Daily News report:
The debate continues regarding whether it is politically correct to use animals as mascots, as well. Peta has lodged complaints in recent days since many teams use live animals held at the ends of "constricting" and "inhumane" ropes, standing in the "steamy hot sun".
Among the new mascots under consideration that have already been approved as possible replacements: the "Water Bottles", the "Paper Napkins" (University of Georgia is considering this name as a possible replacement in order to avoid legal action against the school. "Wipe 'em out Naps! Wipe 'em out!" Catchy.), and finally the "Tortillas," though Mexican Americans had to be consulted before that particular one was adopted. The measure passed 3-1.
[T]he NCAA announced yesterday it would shut those words and images out of postseason tournaments, a move that left some school officials angry and threatening legal action.
Starting in February, any school with a nickname or logo considered racially or ethnically "hostile" or "abusive" by the NCAA would be prohibited from using them in postseason events. Mascots will not be allowed to perform at tournament games, and band members and cheerleaders also will be barred from using American Indians on their uniforms beginning in 2008. [Full story here.]
In an effort to carry out their political correctness to the fullest, it has been rumored that the NCAA has also been reviewing several other measures. Under further consideration: all references to "cowboys" may be changed to "Western Dwelling American Gentlemen" and references to "yankees" may be changed to "Nothern American Liberators". Notre Dame may be forced to change their mascot as Irish-Americans are getting sick and tired of being portrayed as "filthy, stinking brawlers."

Hahahaha, this is excellent satire! It is satire, isn't it?
Isn't it??
Satire? What the heck is satire?
:-)
Excuse an Aussie's ignorance, but what is the NCAA? National Council...???
Sorry, Ian. My fault. I should have included an explanation (I thought about it briefly after I posted...briefly). It is the National College Athletic Association. They govern college/university level sports in the United States.
Man, David. You and I think alike. I've been debating Steve McCoy over this issue, and I made a similar reference to PETA without even reading your blog. Scary.
What can we say, Tim? Great minds...
Wouldn't "Paper Napkins" be offensive to trees? Or at least the NCAA could pretend that they are, even if endorsed by actual trees.
Probably, but their bark is worse than their bite. {:-/
