Wow.
I feel some compassion for him, he is under a tremendous amount of stress and pain but he mostly brought it upon himself by choosing to start this war.
Amy, thanks for you comments. I have to say in response,
1. No president declares war in a vacuum. That is to say, there are many more people involved along with a great deal of information that the president is fed that leads to a decision to go to war. Some of the information was clearly faulty, but Bush's conclusions were the same conclusions that were drawn by all the other parties who had access to that information.
2. Bush didn't wake up one morning and think, "Hey, let's go to war today." I don't think any of us can fully appreciate the stress and agony associated with sending troops into battle.
3. We didn't declare war...it was declared on us. The U.S. didn't go out looking for a fight and, though I think it had been the wrong policy to start with, even Bush was prepared to placate Saddam prior to 9/11. Again, based on the information we had and the threats that Saddam had been making, it was the right decision. We have such short memories. I'm not a fan of war, but even though the public has limited patience and the tendency to be swayed by the loud pacifist voices, this was the right thing to do. It is difficult and it is painful and Bush will get the blame when the public doesn't like what it sees, just like he would get the praise if they liked the results, but to say he brought it on himself, in my opinion, is unfair. We're all good Monday morning quarterbacks.
Nevertheless, though I disagree with your conclusion, I appreciate and welcome your comments here anytime.
