Well, men, perhaps we're not the wimps everyone thinks we are.
According to a recent study, men actually deal with pain better than women.
Men cope with pain better than women, according to new research that dispels the widely held view that all men are really wimps.News to me, but who am I to argue...besides...argh...I have a wicked headache. Ugh! Oh, MAN! Ouch..........I think I need to lay down.
Even though women experience more pain, more often, than men, they also worry about it more, researchers at the University of Bath found. But men look for ways of dealing with pain so that they can get on with their lives.
Dr Ed Keogh, a psychologist from the university's pain management unit, said men took a 'problem-solving' approach while women focused on how pain made them feel.

This is certainly true in my house. My wife is the wimp when it comes to dealing with pain, and she knows it.
...and knowing is half the battle.
OK, I'm not saying that men are wimps. But, did you actually read the article at http://www.bath.ac.uk/news/articles/releases/paingender040705.html
It sounds to me bottomline:
1. Women experience more pain than men throughout a lifetime.
2. Women use their emotions to deal with the pain. Not necessarily a good thing. But, still the case.
3. Men are "concentrating on the physical sensations they experience." Which to says to me--they are not dealing with it too well either. I bet that may mean that woman can accomplish more while in pain than men.
Well, just read the article for yourself. I'll come back for further discussion another time. Take care.
Are you kidding me? Women give birth to children...often without medication! I'm not going to argue with you on that one, Marel. I have no doubt that women can get more done while dealing with pain than men. Heck, often the biggest pain she has to live with is the man. Most of the time, we jump on in this kind of article because, as men in todays world, we're rarely ever "tossed a bone." Since men are usually the butts of jokes, the idiots in commercials and TV, and generally considered the REAL weaker sex, we have to try and take what we can get (even if it means skipping over the finer points of an article ;-) ). Truth be known, men can probably, generally speaking, deal with more intense and acute pain, excluding childbirth(!), than women, but women can get more done with the daily aches, pains, etc. on a regular basis than men. For instance, my wife can work throughout a day with a bad headache. Me? I'm a wimpering little baby who has to get in bed. Arguably, mine are more intense since I have migrains, but I think the principle still holds. I think that's also why there tend to be a dominance of men in the really pain intensive sports such as bull riding, football, etc. I may be wrong, but, if so, it's probably because I have a backache right now and can't really think straight anyway.
OK. Good one. I wasn't sure if it was your summarization of the article or someone else's. Very good point on the bull-riding, football, boxing, etc. Guys are nuts!:)
