It's a bird...it's a plane...it's PSEUDO-MAN

Well, it looks like the traditional man is out. We're now moving to the emergence of pseudo-man. Apparently, there is a call for all real men to come out of the closet even if they were never in it. At least that is the take in a recent AFP news article.

Macho man is an endangered species, with today's male more likely to opt for a pink flowered shirt and swingers' clubs than the traditional role as family super-hero, fashion industry insiders say.

A study along these lines led by French marketing and style consultants Nelly Rodi was unveiled to Fashion Group International during a seminar Tuesday on future strategy for the fashion industry in Europe.

"The masculine ideal is being completely modified. All the traditional male values of authority, infallibility, virility and strength are being completely overturned," said Pierre Francois Le Louet, the agency's managing director.

So, exactly who is it that is modifying this ideal? Who is overturning "traditional male values"? Well, turn on the TV at just about any time of the day and you will see this new "ideal" constantly paraded before you. Pick up just about any popular magazine. Listen to or read some of the new advertisements.

Instead today's males are turning more towards "creativity, sensitivity and multiplicity," as seen already in recent seasons on the catwalks of Paris and Milan.

Arnold Schwarznegger and Sylvester Stallone are being replaced by the 21st-century man who "no longer wants to be the family super-hero", but instead has the guts to be himself, to test his own limits.
I suppose that if you are creative and sensitive, you can no longer be a family man. At least, if you're a family man you're certainly no longer a real man. Raising children and remaining faithful to your wife is no longer honorable. Instead, what our society now values seems to be throwing off all sense of responsibility and doing what your instincts tell you to do; doing what comes natural...that takes guts.

Sorry, folks, but I absolutely reject these new ideals. To me, it still takes guts to control yourself in spite of your "animal instincts." It takes guts to remain faithful to a relationship even when things get tough. It takes guts to live and work according to concrete ethical and moral standards. It takes guts to be a sensitive, caring, loving, creative heterosexual man.

I am a great advocate for treating all human beings, regardless of whether or not I agree with their choices, lifestyles, etc., with the dignity and respect they deserve as being created in the image of God (if you don't believe me, peruse some of my old posts). But I will not keep silent at the expense of God's ideal for men. I will not remain silent as the very definition of "man" is redefined before our very eyes.

I'm not about to tell someone else how to dress or how to act. I don't think simply changing actions makes any real impact on the heart or the beliefs of any individual. But I'm frankly tired of people who design clothes, write sitcoms and create reality shows telling the rest of us what makes (or doesn't make) a man.

"We are watching the birth of a hybrid man. ... Why not put on a pink-flowered shirt and try out a partner-swapping club?" asked Le Louet, stressing that the study had focused on men aged between 20 and 35.

Sociologists and other experts spent three months analyzing some 150 magazines and books and 146 Internet sites, as well as interviewing a dozen experts from Europe, the United States and China.

The traditional man still exists in China, Le Louet said, and "is not ready to go". But in Europe and the United States, a new species is emerging, apparently unafraid of anything.

"He is looking for a more radical affirmation of who he is, and wants to test out all the barbarity of modern life" including in the sexual domain, said Le Louet, adding that Reebok with its "I am what I am" campaign had perfectly tapped into this current trend.

The emergence of this new male beast who wants to look and feel good, and who will also have an impact on the role of women, presages a new potentially lucrative market for the European fashion industry.

It is no coincidence that the writer chooses words like "species," "beast" and "barbarity" to describe this new "hybrid man" as he embraces animalistic qualities never intended for humanity. It is, to borrow a phrase from C. S. Lewis, the "abolition of man." We are destroying ourselves little by little. We are embracing the most outrageous and inhuman practices as normal. We are redefining the standard for masculinity. As the father of a 4 year old son, that concerns me greatly.

Morality continues the 180 degree turn in 21st century, making what is right, wrong. Oops, sorry...that was so modernist of me, wasn't it? If I don't watch what I say I may offend someone. We live in a culture, however, where it's only cool to offend those who embrace a more traditional view of masculinity. The one's that actually like females, enjoy our families, and believe that aspiring to be a hero to our kids is still a worthy goal.

Perhaps some think this is nothing to be overly bothered about; no big deal; not that important. I am not one of those. It goes much farther than simply fashion choices ("Why not put on a pink-flowered shirt and try out a partner-swapping club?"). It goes straight to the heart of man. Where will it stop? It won't. Those who push this cultural shift on the greater society have too much to gain and too many who should be concerned believe there's nothing really to lose.
"All those labels which have adapted to this freedom of expression are on the up, all those which are too rigid will suffer in the future,"
You better believe that there is a whole lot more that will suffer than just clothing labels.

If postmodernism embraces deconstruction in society, perhaps we are seeing some of the first signs of what the re-constructed society of the next generations is going to look like.

Frenchmen from the Fashion industry tell us its no longer cool to be a real man.

Thats like Chirac telling us that free trade is a bad idea.

We expect nothing else from those who know nothing of what they speak.
