For what it's worth, my money's on Alex
Alright, so I'm not betting...but if I did, it would definitely be on Afleet Alex during tomorrow's running of the Belmont Stakes.
Surely everyone has heard by now the inspiring story of Alexandra "Alex" Scott, the girl for whom Afleet Alex, the horse that placed third in the Kentucky Derby and won the Preakness Stakes, is named. I saw Alexandra last year on one of the morning news shows and was taken aback by her bravery, selfless spirit and determination.
Alex died last year at the tender age of eight, but her legacy lives on. The Louisville Courier-Journal has a really well-written story about the affect this little girl has had on the world and for the cause of cancer research. Evidence that one person, regardless of how young or healthy, can make a huge difference.
Go Alex, Go!
Correction: I believe I was incorrect in saying that Afleet Alex was named after Alexandra. Apparently, given that the little girl and the horse shared a name, the owners of Afleet Alex contacted Alexandra's parents and asked if they could work together in order to raise greater awareness of Alexandra's cause.
