Bush's Message to Syria
I really like John Gibson's word on Bush. Like the Prez or not, he's getting things done....now he's able to speak softly because he carries a big stick.Labels: David C. Price

Talk about hyperbole! On Syrian withdrawal from Lebanon it wasn't just the US that was saying withdraw it was really the world, including states like Saudi Arabia. To suggest that Bush is the major thrust behind Syrian withdrawal is a distortion at best. Does the US play a role, yes, but it is typical US arrogance to assume that we are making it happen.
Whether the US will be successful even in establishing a democracy in Iraq much less a democracy we would like to have,(non islamic) waits to be seen, as does also the minor steps that a few Arabic states have said they would take. It is naive to assume that the Saudi royalty is likely to relinquish their power willingly or readily.
Like the late Premier of China Chou En Lai said when asked what he thought of the French Revolution: It's too early to tell.
Oh, come on. Of course it's the whole world putting pressure on Syria. That's not the point. Where is the leadership coming from that encourages the world to put the pressure on. It's not a distortion or arrogance to say that President Bush is providing the leadership to make it happen and it's nothing more than observation and facing reality that says he has earned the clout to take that leadership position. It's rather a denial of that reality that says Syria would have made these concessions without a strong, determined leader who is unafraid to back up demands with actions. Please...a little credit where it's due.

Great post, David. And to anonymous I would say I am quite certain that Syria would have responded to France's call to withdraw even without American troops next right next door. Or that the memory of Saddam being dragged out of his hole is not a recurring nightmare for baby Assad. Yes, all the movement towards democracy in the Middle East would have occurred regardless, W just happened to be in the chair when it did. Which leaves just one question, what is the weather like on your world?
