another flip flop?

captain's quarters posts that john kerry is joining in the demand for a recount in ohio. again, this is the same guy who one day says its time to move on toward unity and the next day tells his caucus he's ready to renew his fight with president bush.

i would tend to agree with ed's assessment that kerry is priming the pump for the next go around: "this leaves no doubt that kerry intends on setting himself up as the frontrunner in 2008 by attempting to delegitimize Bush's victory in the media."

with his gracious concession speech, kerry had accomplished what al gore failed to do at the end of the 2000 election which was to position himself, not only as a conciliatory leader within an unpopular party, but as a true, respectable statesman. instead, kerry--like gore before him--merely looks like just another sore loser. this really is a shame and an example of another kerry missed opportunity.

--------
12-2-04 update: little green footballs is reporting that in the ohio recount, kerry won the provisional ballots by a small margin...but bush still carried the state by 6%. again i say, made kerry look even worse. stick a fork in him, cause he's done.

There have been others who were able to win after defeat, Lincoln and Nixon come to mind. I don't think Kerry has the kind of following that those two had. Kerry was the "not-Bush" candidate, which isn't going to be relevant next go round. The DNC is going to want nothing to do with him. I actually think the tide is really turning for conservatism. I like Bush, but I think whoever that next candidate is, will need to really satisfy the needs of the elecorate in the way that Ronald Reagan did. The next hot issue is going to be illegal immigration. 70% of the American populace is unhappy with the lack of enforcing policy and law, and I think the next President will be elected on that issue.

agreed...i think kerry is done and i also believe this will only serve to put the nail in the coffin. it strikes of desperation. frankly, i think there will be a new democratic candidate come on the scene (perhaps Obama?). i think with the recent shift further to the right, hillary will be conceived (rightly so!) as too divisive to have a serious candidacy.

interesting thought on the imigration issue. we're a long way from the next election so anything can happen, but there is definitely concern over imigration at this point (i know i am). we will definitely need a strong unifier for the next candidate, but even a strong candidate won't help if bush alienates the center. his "mandate" can evaporate very quickly even among the faithful. i hope he steps wisely.
